Once again, what started as a realistic rendition, got changed when I reached for my favorite palette knife and moved paint around. I allow the painting to speak to me, while there is nothing wrong with realism, often I want something more and am willing to risk ruining a good effort with spontaneous marks done with a palette knife. Playing it safe does not allow for growth.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-15099815816175947942020-07-05T15:07:00.000-07:002020-07-05T15:29:12.810-07:00

This piece was a lot of fun to create. I primed the canvas with large swatches of acrylic paint creating a lot of texture in the process. Using oil paint and a palette knife, I pulled out the image being careful to allow some of the texture to prevail and guide the interpretation. The omission of details was a deliberate choice.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-27316037626598516182020-07-05T14:39:00.001-07:002020-08-02T20:07:23.617-07:00

Inspired by a lovely young actress whose role as Helen Keller in the theatre production of "The Miracle Worker" caught the eye of a budding photographer which led to a photo shoot and the black & white photograph that would serve as a reference for this pastel painting.
This piece is done on a pastel support that I am using for the first time as my favorite Wallis pastel paper is no longer in production. It is likely that this may be my last pastel as I am working in oil and acrylic these days, but one never knows, as an artist, I keep all options open.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-18144704464839923162016-03-09T17:20:00.000-08:002016-03-09T17:21:29.124-08:00A FAVORITE HAT 2
This piece is painted on pastel board with a nice sanded tooth. I had a different back-ground planned but decided to change it. As an artist, you have to be flexible, the painting seldom evolves the way you initially envisioned - you must be willing to push yourself, take risks, allow yourself to learn and grow and hopefully improve as an artist, after-all, what have you to loose? As one of my teachers often said, you have a 50/50 chance of messing with a Master-piece...Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-14729163885912463072015-06-11T16:19:00.001-07:002015-06-11T16:19:45.983-07:00NEAL
Painting the male model gives the artist a chance to appreciate the landscape of planes, angles, character lines that are more apparent with the masculine form. I used broken strokes to suggest the rugged skin quality. The challenge was balancing all that warmth of a sunset with cooler skin tones and since so much of the bright yellow shirt was reflecting into the face, I had to seek out and emphasize the cooler tones. Funny thing is, I was attracted to all that yellow in the first place so it did not make sense to change the color of the shirt.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-2206766977014391562015-05-18T20:00:00.002-07:002015-06-09T13:14:01.777-07:00DAYDREAMING
I don't use medium when I paint, if I need to thin the paint, I use a little walnut oil. I seek out materials that are as safe as possible and most mediums are too toxic for my liking.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-7309343564999801352015-01-21T16:15:00.002-08:002015-09-07T15:03:07.063-07:00PROFILE IN BLUE
Inspired by an art show I saw in Aspen, I wanted to try my hand at abstraction, but loving the portrait as much as I do, I knew that it would have to be incorporated somehow, so with soft pastels and wallis paper, I went about creating what I consider a marriage between realism and abstraction. The process was quite exhilarating.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-48197262319595962492014-08-07T20:23:00.001-07:002014-08-10T14:58:26.903-07:00"REFLECTIONS"
Painted on Wallis paper using soft pastels. I don't usually do landscapes but when I saw this beautiful young model in the water with the colorful reflections, I knew that I would paint her. A friend invited me to do a live demonstration. After socializing and enjoying a few refreshments and a glass of wine, I went to work painting this piece in acrylic. I was surprised at the result, always wondered what a painting would look like after a glass of wine (I don't drink.) I later went over that acrylic attempt with oil, keeping additional touches to a minimal so as not to loose the spontaneity of the live demonstration. The goal was to capture the essence of the features with as few details as possible while keeping the paint and brush stroke lively. I had such fun with this piece. I have been invited to do another demo.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-22025555770322529872014-02-14T13:18:00.001-08:002014-05-29T08:58:09.496-07:00Title: "EVENING REVERIE"
Every painting is a new experience and an opportunity to try something different. I started this piece with an abstract acrylic underpainting on Wallis paper. Once dry, I laid in the figure with soft pastels being careful not to blend but allowing the strokes to suggest a blended effect. The play of warm and cool colors create a lively effect - much more evident in the actual painting.

My daughter graciously agreed to model for me, a rear treat these days - she is a busy teenager. I started this piece by laying in bold strokes of vivid colors, intending it to be impressionistic, hoping to suggest the forms rather than rendering them accurately, but as so often, it ended up being a realistic painting. Realism seems to be my "default" button, the style I revert to in spite of my efforts to break out of that mold. Although the painting turned out to be quite different than the image in my head, I am pleased with the results. I can always try again for the effect I want, perhaps even using a different medium - oil and palette knife come to mind...Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6335620395930919741.post-34984085691774685242013-12-27T18:17:00.000-08:002013-12-27T18:17:35.407-08:00"LETTUCE"
After painting a portrait or two, I will usually paint a still life to de-stress, I refer to it as "clearing the palette." I find figure painting to be the most challenging of subject matters, that is not to say that still-life is easy, all painting is difficult if it is done well.
I have painted this subject several times in different mediums and each time I have been fortunate to sell the painting.Denise Henleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15573677880082347739noreply@blogger.com0
